Evolving Focus

First, the emphasis was on redistribution of road space for people who were currently cycling.

Then, the priority evolved to quality cycling infrastructure that would induce motorists to cycle instead for their transportation needs.

Now, the focus is shifting towards cycling being one of the strategies for delivering vibrant, liveable urban neighbourhoods that are sustainable in the long term and green, making contributions to improvement in the quality of air, in personal health, in helping reducing the obesity health crisis, and in contributing towards the reduction of health care costs.

Somehow, the city has faced the challenge and provided a North American style cycling capacity that exceeds many other cities. What is evident when cycling around the city core is the forward thinking of staff.

Separated bike lanes have been shown to be successful in persuading a shifting from driving to cycling. It is a tool that comes in many configurations of designs and fit into local urban form. The type chosen has a direct impact on the degree of local acceptance and of success in increasing cycling.

Reducing the effects of car usage and impact is achieved through extensive traffic calming, people streets, cycling priority, and efficient street designs that give tramway, pedestrians, and cyclists true priority.

Vancouver, British Columbia – Should the Vancouver Viaducts be demolished?

Demolishing the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts would allow for more development on this part of the downtown peninsula. The question is if there would be any real impact on car driving when each year the continued direction is for less and less people travelling to the downtown peninsula for work, shopping, and entertainment by car.

The viaducts were originally built in the 1970's as part of a scheme to put an expressway through downtown. This initiative was stopped by the city's residents. All that remains of the scheme are the viaducts. The question being dialogues is if the viaducts should continue to exist and service car and bicycle movement or should they come down in favour of on-grade streets, thereby opening up lands for development. As development of adjacent lands are in the works, it is a timely discussion for the city to set its direction.

Vancouver, British Columbia – Transportation 2040 Plan

The city is in the process of developing an new transportation plan with a focus on Active Transportation (walking, cycling, and transit). The next stage is for public consultation. Some thoughts are being offered for consideration.
